Goodwill calls on Orillia community to work with them toward a solution
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(June 15, 2006) – Toronto - Goodwill Greater Toronto, Central and Eastern Ontario today announced that its retail store located at
425 West Street North in Orillia, could remain open.
“Goodwill is committed to Orillia and the community. The response by the community, asking us to keep our store open, has been
significant and we want the community to work with us to keep a Goodwill store open in Orillia,” said Ken Connelly, President and
CEO of Goodwill Toronto.
Goodwill announced on June 1, 2006 that its Orillia retail location would be converted into an Attended Donation Centre. Goodwill
planned to announce a new retail location if the level of donations was raised to support it. Initially though the store was to close
until a new location was found. However, an outcry of support for the Orillia Goodwill Community Store caused Goodwill to reconsider
its decision.
“From a financial perspective, Goodwill needs a higher level of donations and a new Attended Donation Centre, in addition to the
existing retail store in Orillia,” said Dr. Connelly.
Goodwill stores rely on the support of the community’s donations. Since the announcement of the store’s transformation into a
donation centre, the community in Orillia already increased donations. Goodwill thanks Orillia residents for their support and hopes
that donations can continue at an even greater rate, with the goal of keeping the Orillia retail store open.
The community’s response to the decision prompted Goodwill to reconsider its decision and formulate new ideas that would allow
the Orillia Community Store to remain open in this or another yet to be determined nearby location. A key part of this plan is to open
a new Attended Donation Centre in Orillia to increase donations.
Additionally, Goodwill will be introducing the R.E.A.C.H. (Real Employment to Achieve Community Health) transitional employment
program to Orillia. R.E.A.C.H. offers transitional employment positions to marginalized members of communities, who face serious
barriers to employment, including the young, the old, new Canadians and people with disabilities. Goodwill’s goal is to create at
least 1,000 Transitional Employment jobs annually by 2010.
Goodwill is a registered charity whose mission is to provide work opportunities and skills development to people facing barriers to
employment. Its operation of retail outlets and donations centres and other lines of business is its means to deliver its mission
throughout Greater Toronto, Central and Eastern Ontario.
