Goodwill believes every member of our community should
have access to employment. We also believe that most individuals can
work given the right kind of support and opportunity. Finally, we
believe that the best way to get a community to work is to be a community;
to include, welcome and provide work opportunities for all members
of society, no matter what barriers they may face.
Unfortunately, the labour market is generally closed to workers with
few marketable skills, little education and personal problems, which
may interfere with regular work schedules. It seems that the marginalized
members of our society are always the most vulnerable to trends in
our workforce. They are the first to be let go and the last to be
hired.
Research shows that work provides a sense of purpose, socialization,
self-esteem, opportunities for personal growth and perhaps most important
of all, the chance to develop relationships. Work can be described
as “the great connector” and people who work become contributors,
consumers and productive citizens in their communities.
At Goodwill, the work we create builds value - economically, socially,
and environmentally. Working brings people into the economy, buying
things, paying taxes, hiring others-giving instead of needing to receive.
